Hidden paydesks a frustration to shoppers

- MIKE THURGOOD Milnerton

THE ENLARGED Woolworths store in Canal Walk is now indeed very impressive, and it is able to display a lot more clothes than previously, with more room between the display stands.

But, oh dear, oh dear! Those terrible hidden paydesks! Woolworths’s management must have been fast asleep when their layout was decided. They are well hidden from view from the display stands.

There aren’t even any ceiling notices to indicate where they are. And if a shopper is lucky enough to find one, and it happens to be closed, he or she has to walk nearly 80m to the other one on the other side of the store. It was quite ridiculous of the Woolworths’s management to have ever been so intolerably inconsiderate of their source of income – their customers.

Where should they have been located in such a wide store? Down the middle, of course! And they should be relocated as soon as possible to eliminate the irritation that many of their shoppers must feel for such a lack of consideration.

However, one might ask: Why not locate them near the exit, in rows as in the case of the many food stores, including the Woolworths food store in The Paddocks and Canal Walk? I am not suggesting that the character of the clothing paydesks be changed, only their location, but specifically in Canal Walk because of the huge size of that store.

But they could be made double-sided, of course in future.
