Science labs open doors for pupils
A NEW state-of-the-art science learning centre is like manna from heaven for teachers and pupils in Porterville.
Porterville Primary is one of three schools in the province where University of the Western Cape science learning centres were opened yesterday. The other two schools are Bernadino Heights High in Kraaifontein and Sophumelela High in Samora Machel.
Porterville Primary science teacher Kayleen Arendse said the school recently moved into new buildings and she previously had to “get creative” when doing science experiments with her pupils.
“We had nothing before. I sometimes used my own money to buy what we needed for experiments. Now we have a smart board and I can connect to YouTube and my pupils can watch any experiment.”
The labs are an initiative of the UWC Science Learning Centre for Africa and 32 schools have been recipients of the project.
Ten more are expected to be opened this year.
Bernadino Heights principal Henry Alexander said he hoped the new centre would encourage more pupils to take an interest in physical science.
Sophumelela High principal Mzimasi Hoho said pupils and teachers were excited about the new facility, which is equipped with the latest technology.
Professor Shaheed Hartley, director of the UWC Science Learning Centre for Africa, said: “We have to start with the basics in terms of supporting teachers to regain confidence to teach science with an advanced level of understanding, knowledge and teaching skills.
“Similarly, we have to be creative in providing learners with opportunities that will draw their interest and willingness to learn. Hence developing a culture of science teaching and learning will be a good start to improve National Senior Certificate and other assessments.”
