Safety advice for tackling the Big Walk
AS EXCITEMENT builds for the Sunfoil Cape Town Big Walk on Sunday, the organisers have prepared a list of dos and don’ts for the fun-filled family day, to ensure the event runs smoothly.
Safety is first priority; although most people can do a 10km or 5km quite easily, those with certain health conditions or disabilities need to take advice from doctors or relevant experts to ensure they can participate safely.
Registration on Saturday will take place from 10am till 2pm at the College of Cape Town, Crawford Campus, where entrants will be given their goodie bag containing a first-of-its-kind branded Cape Town Big Walk T-shirt.
Be early: The organisers urge the
THURSDAY FEBRUARY 25 2016 public to come at least an hour before the starter’s gun goes off at 7.30am.
Wear suitable clothing: Loose clothing is preferable with walking shoes.
Protect yourself from the sun: Walkers should take care to wear hats and protective clothing, as well as to apply sunscreen lotion.
Drink water: Hydration is key with entrants being encouraged to consume sufficient water. Water points are provided at every 2km intervals.
Do not litter: Sea Point Promenade has bins. Participants are urged to dispose of waste in the bins.
Stay for the prizes: At the finish line, entrants get a medal, ice cream and cold drinks, but it does not end there with entertainment and spot prize giveaways, including Android tablets, smartphones, walking shoes, and mountain bikes etc. There will be a lucky draw for, among other things, a fully-paid trip for two to Phuket for eight nights at a beach resort.
