Fundracers drive collects R53 850 in donations

- Robin Henney

AS THE 39th rendition of the Cape Town Cycle Tour (CTCT) came to an end yesterday, supporters had showed they could open their hearts and wallets, with R53 850 being raised at the time of going to print for the six major charities through the CTCTFundracers online charity portal.

Designed with the aim of turning the CTCT into the world’s largest fundraising cycle race, the online charity portal was set up for registered riders to create their own custom “fundracer” profile and select one of the six charities nominated by the CTCT sponsors to raise funds for.

Participants appealed to friends, family and the public to sponsor their rides by inviting them to “like” the campaign through Facebook and Twitter.

The portal was spearheaded by local personalities who campaigned on behalf of the charities, including MEC of Economic Opportunities Alan Winde, and Momentum head of sponsorships Carel Bosman.

Winde raised at least R2 500 for Velokhaya while Bosman raised R13 500 for the Children’s Hospital Trust.

One of the charities, PinkDrive, had 78 riders in the field. One of them, Chantel Rall raised R6 000.

Velokhaya had 34 fundracers, while the Chaeli Campaign had 17. These included seven buggy teams, comprised of cyclists such as Team Sassy Cassy’s Graeme Colman and 11-year-old Cassidy Bailey.

Tshwane Urban Riders – an NPO registered cycling club based in Mamelodi, Pretoria East – had 16 fundracers, with eight riding for Marsh Memorial Homes.

The 121 fundracers riding for the Children’s Hospital Trust collectively brought in the lion’s share of the donations via the portal, raking in R22 600.
