SportShow wows crowds
Action-packed fest draws huge crowd
PARTLY cloudy conditions over Stellenbosch could not deter the crowds coming out in their droves for the second day of the Cape Argus SportShow, which ends today. International acts such as Lords of Gravity, from Hungary, drew enormous crowds, with many parents having to hoist their children onto their shoulders for a better look. The team wowed audiences with their expertly executed acrobatic flips, tricks and somersaults.
Janice and Martin Rogers, both 75, from Pinelands, came extra early yesterday so their grandchildren, Lisa and Reese, could get a good spot on the bleachers in anticipation of the second show, which started at 3.30pm.
Lords of Gravity team members Marton Lucaks and Benjamin Goy told the Cape Argus they loved exploring Cape Town and mentioning that Table Mountain was a highlight for them.
The team leaves the city tomorrow, but plan to explore as much as they can before then. They said the energy of the crowd was amazing: “We really perform for them, so when they cheer, we just love it”.
Cape Argus editor Gasant Abarder said the SportShow was not to be missed: “The Cape Argus SportShow is a great day out for the entire family and there is something for each member of the family to enjoy – from the high octane performances to shopping for products to the amazing food trucks.
“There is one more day to go and if you haven’t been, I suggest you get your fix of the first multi-sport event of its kind in the country.
It’s only the first year and it’s going to get bigger and even better”.
Cape Argus SportShow chief executive Stephan Jooste said the first day, on Saturday, was extremely successful, with the event creating a buzz on social media.
“The event drew huge crowds from the start. The Speakerbox was full every time someone spoke and the acts were always full of supporters.”
On what the future holds for next year’s Cape Argus SportShow, Jooste said: “We definitely want to increase public participation, have more competitions and giveaways to get people involved.”
Jooste said an even bigger turnout was expected today.
Freestyle motorcross (FMX) rider Nick de Wit, 34, said the SportShow had been

“amazing so far”.
“The set-up that we have is a first in South Africa. It incorporates a mixture of BMX, skate, in-line skate and FMX, with riders all performing side-by-side and over each other. It’s awesome,” he said.
He added that the crowd loved the high adrenalin stunts.
“As we perform, we get to see the expressions on the faces of the people in the crowd. And as soon as we start up our bikes, everyone comes running to get a good spot.”
Kuils River resident Alan Everitt and his 13-year-old son Craig made sure they got a front row view of all the acts yesterday.
Craig broke his ankle in an U14A rugby match recently and has to use a wheelchair. That didn’t stop the father and son from getting up close and personal with the performers and athletes.
Everitt said: “We will definitely be coming next year.
“This is such a cool show and we love the vibe.”
