FORMER South African cricket heroes wowed spectators at the Cape Town Sixes Cricket and Cultural Festival at Green Point Cricket Club yesterday.

Mango Groove, Jimmy Nevis, the Kiffness and Rory Eliot performed, to the delight of the crowd.

The highlight of the day was the performance of a team featuring former national cricketers Allan Donald, Meyrick Pringle, Aubrey Martin and Rory Kleinveldt.

Former Proteas fast bowler Brett Schultz also made a cameo appearance as an umpire.

Festival organiser Greg Viljoen said: “We have had people from all walks of life – from our under-13 players to our old boys’ league. The line-up, which features Mango Groove, Jimmy Nevis, the Kiffness and Rory Eliot, has ensured a perfect ending to what has been a fantastic weekend of sport.”

Viljoen said the atmosphere was so electric the event was host to more than 3 000 visitors over the weekend.

“It has been a great start to the inaugural event of the Cape Town Sixes this weekend,” said Viljoen.

More than 470 players in 56 teams, many from disadvantaged communities, competed against each other in various leagues.

The former national team members also engaged junior players from the Khayelitsha Cricket Club in a coaching clinic.

Comedian and radio personality Dalin Oliver acted as master of ceremonies and took part in one of the games.

Sportsmen and women who worked up an appetite enjoyed a hearty meal at the Food Nations village, which featured cuisine from the world’s top cricket nations.

“We encourage everyone to jump on board and join us next year,” said Oliver.
