Bucket system blight on service delivery

- BARBIE SANDLER Claremont

I WOULD like to congratulate the Western Cape on being the best province for service delivery.

When voters go to the polls they need to think about this.

Especially in those provinces which are not giving good service delivery.

Voters should know what to do to hold the government accountable. Vote for those councillors who are producing the goods.

With the influx of people from all over, it is commendable that we are the best.

However, the province did not fare so well on the eradication of the bucket system.

But there may be reasons for that, in that people do not want to leave their shacks at night to go to the toilets down the road for fear of being attacked and so resort to the bucket system.

Until every home has a flush toilet this won’t change, I am afraid. The problem is also whether we will ever get rid of the shacks. I do not think so. As fast as homes are built more shacks are built on the front of the new homes.

Anyone going out to the airport can see this. Now either the homes being built are not big enough, or alternatively they are letting shack dwellers put their shacks up on the front of the houses for a rental.

So it is like the little boy with his finger in the dyke. A never ending flood. It is a pity this is allowed. In fact, I have to ask why it is allowed?

I remember an article by Trevor Manuel saying we would be rid of shacks by 2030. Until this putting up of shacks onto the walls of new houses is stopped I do not see this happening. The bottom line of course is the elephant in the room.

We need to limit our numbers if we need a better life for all
