Fugitive duo rearrested
woven into the tops to keep them together, said Tamarah Renecle fromInstitute.
Jesse Laitinen, Streetscapes project manager at Khulisa, said: “We must test the area before planting. It’s only growing now and we have been here for two months. Our aim is to keep 10 people employed and sustained with this garden.”
When asked about the next step, Laitinen said: “We plan to have two more gardens next year, one on the Foreshore and one on Constitution Street. We also have plans for a compost heap in Philippi and to have a vegetable garden next to it and the vegetables will be available to the community at no cost.” TWO CONVICTED murder and robbery fugitives, Sibusiso Nicholas Ngcane, 33, and Linda Michael Cele, 31, who escaped from custody on July 18, have been rearrested, Mpumalanga police said.
“The duo were busted at their different hideouts in Soshanguve near Tshwane after the police left no stone unturned in following all possible leads,” Brigadier Leonard Hlathi said.
Ngcane and Cele escaped while being escorted to a police vehicle after they had each been handed a 28-year prison sentence.
They were convicted on two counts of business robbery in Middelburg and another business robbery and a murder at Elukwatini.
Ngcane was arrested on Wednesday, followed by Cele the next day.
When Cele was rearrested, he was found in possession of two 9mm pistols with their serial numbers filed off, Hlathi said.
Both convicts had already appeared in the Middelburg Magistrate’s Court on charges of escaping from custody, with Cele facing an additional charge of unlawful possession of firearms.
They are scheduled to appear again on a later date.
Police management said they appreciated the working relationship with the community who came forward and provided information regarding the whereabouts of the fugitives, and also commended the swift response by police to the tip-off, Hlathi said. – ANA
