CAPE Town’s deep hip-hop and reggae roots, interwoven with messages about the African diaspora, will be celebrated on Sunday.

Woodstock Live will celebrate this legacy by hosting “Hip-hop and Reggae Sunday” at Trafalgar park.

The latest addition to the Woodstock Live series of events will showcase Cape Town’s diverse music culture and featuresvoices such as Wordsmith, Hemelbesem, Youngsta and Gugulethu rootsman Crosby Bolani.

Hemelbesem is an acclaimed up-and-coming Afrikaans hip-hop artist who worked on the soundtrack to

South Africa’s official entry in the Best Foreign Language Film category at the 89th Academy Awards.

They will perform alongside veterans in the hip-hop and reggae genres, like Sons of Selassie and the dancehall-ska driven Rudimentals. Christopher de Vries of the Kaggen Music and Culture Trust said some of the artists on the bill were taking the hiphop and reggae scene forward.

“Artists such as Youngsta and Hemelbesem take forward the groundwork laid by South African hip-hop pioneers such as Prophets of Da City and Black Noise.”

He said Woodstock Live was a platform for Cape Town music and the community to affirm and explore the legacy of the genres.

The Woodstock Live series debuted at Trafalgar Park in March. DJs including Dubmaster China and Real Rozzano will hit the decks to entertain the crowd.
