Phase 1 of mass animal sterilisation drive starts next month
THE SOUTH African Mass Animal Sterilisation Trust (SA.Mast) is set to roll out its first phase of sterilisations, called Alpha Impact, by December 7.
The event will take place at the SA Mast Animal clinic in Khayelitsha, and will feature an exhibition by well-known graffiti artist Maxwell South Gate, more popularly known as Mak1One.
“SA.Mast has risen to the challenges that were set before us in 1994,” said Tamsin Nel, founder and director of the organisation.
“Their actions, the relationship they have with the Khayelitsha community and the partnerships they have with the broader South African and international community is a visible reflection of the words spoken by Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu when he said ‘my humanity is bound up in yours, for we can only be human together’.”
Mak1One, who has been “bombing” the city for more than two decades with street art, will transform the exterior surface of the clinic.
“The hospital is made up of separate pieces with beautiful corners and shapes that work together and act as one, to help South Africa flourish and grow, just like our country is made up of many different cultures, races, and religions, and one must work as one,” he said.
The organisation will be carrying out free sterilisations for cats and dogs, and will also provide free consultation for pet owners with sick or injured animals.
On Wednesday next week, SA.Mast would be celebrating achieving its goal of sterilising up to 80percent of all animals in Khayelitsha.
Its 2017 campaign will be called Clean Sweep, and the expansion of its programmes to beyond Khayelitsha in 2018, will be a campaign called New Dawn.
“Be prepared to be amazed, astounded and awestruck as we will be celebrating the largest area-specific and goal-driven campaign of its kind ever to have taken over the African continent,” said Nel.
