Tlale holds auditions for new fashion reality show

- Lonwabo Marele

A NEW reality show will see 12 up-and-coming fashion designers vying to be the next assistant to famous SA designer David Tlale.

Called ‘The Intern’, it will be hosted by Tlali. Auditions were held in Cape Town and will move to Durban, Polokwane and Johannesburg.

The auditions in Cape Town were held on Monday and Tuesday at the Castle. On Thursday and Friday it will move to Greyville Racecourse, Durban, and next Monday and Tuesday to the Meropa Casino in Polokwane. The final auditions will be held at the Johannesburg City Hall on June 1 and 2.

On June 3, the top 12 participants will be announced. They will then fly up to Johannesburg where the real work will begin. Tlale said the initiative would transform the face of fashion in South Africa and add skill, excellence and passion to the continent’s fashion industry.

The Vosloorus-born and bred fashion designer recently opened for the Mercedes-Benz Cape Town Fashion Week and with his vision and ability he is looking to embrace the excellence of the South African market, resuscitating its clothing and textile industry.

“We want to change the game and also this mentality that South Africans don’t deliver on time. I believe South Africans can deliver, only if there is a paradigm shift and if we instil that knowledge and we can deliver an excellent product. We can even compete globally.” The show is looking for brands that are made in South Africa to sell on a global stage.

“We know that Cape Town and Durban were thriving manufacturing cities and we export a lot of products and that industry has slowly diminished because of all the drama that is happening around us like inflation or recession and all of that. As the current generation, we need to bring back that culture, because as South Africans we do manufacture and in bulk.” ‘The Intern’ will air on SABC 3.
