SA on Ebola alert

-

Vasu Gounden and Professor Cheryl Potgieter are commissioners and Solomuzi Mdledle is secretary of the commission.

Lawyers Bheki Manyathi and Michelle Andile Ngqanda were appointed as evidence leaders.

The commission, based in Mayville, started its work in March. At the time of the establishment of the commission, Mchunu said records showed that 12 members of the ANC, three members of the IFP, three members of the NFP and two SACP members had been murdered in recent months.

Kaunda condemned the murder of elected public representatives.

“This is shocking as it appears to be a concerted and systematic elimination of public servants. I have sharply raised this issue with the police management. We need to conduct a proper security threat analysis on people serving in public office. Police have been briefed to work around the clock to ensure that those responsible for this disgusting deed should be brought to book soonest.” –ANA THE DEPARTMENT of Health is on the alert following the reported outbreak of the Ebola virus in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

On May 12, the World Health Organisation (WHO) announced that nine suspected cases and three deaths of people with Ebola virus disease (EVD) were reported from a remote forested area in the north-east of the DRC, bordering the Central African Republic.

As of May 20, 37 suspected EVD cases and four deaths had been reported.

The reported cases are from five areas in the DRC.

No health-care workers have been affected.

Most of the victims had fever, vomiting, bloody diarrhoea and other bleeding symptoms and signs.

The outbreak is confined to Likati Health Zone.

There is a low risk of transmission to South Africa. However, South African hospital casualty departments and clinicians have been warned to be on the alert for cases of fever and/or haemorrhagic symptoms among travellers returning from the area.

Malaria is the most common cause of fever among travellers in Africa.

More information on viral haemorrhagic fevers can be found at http://www.nicd.ac.za/ index.php/ebola-virus-disease/. – ANA
