Getting down and dirty to clean up beach

- – Staff Reporter

ABOUT 100 people gathered to clean up Hout Bay beach at the weekend, ahead of World Environment Day today and World Oceans Day.

Although Hout Bay is one of those beaches that gets a regular clean-up, quite a sizeable amount of dirt was collected, said Priscilla Urquhart, Coca Cola Peninsula Beverages (Pty) communications manager. She said that with each CCPB clean-up, beach-goers were becoming more aware of cleaning up after themselves.

“Cleaning up the environment is just one way of giving back to the communities where we serve. At every beach clean-up, we use the opportunity to talk about the value of recycling plastic items and encourage preservation of natural beauty that we can all enjoy together,” said Urquhart.

The aim was not only to clean the shoreline but to ensure the rubbish does not end up in the ocean, causing untold harm to marine life and the people who use the oceans either to work, play, swim or live off it.
