Report illegal dumping in city
LAW enforcement members caught the driver of a huge truck dumping a full load of builders’ rubble on public open space in Olieboom Road, Philippi. The area is a known hotspot for this type of offence and the officers were patrolling the area when they saw the incident occur. The driver received a R5 000 fine and a further R7 500 is payable if his employer wishes to recover the truck.
The Cape Argus recently launched the Clean Your Hood campaign. One of the biggest challenges the city faces is overcoming the scourge of littering, dumping and the destruction of the environment.
In many of our neighbourhoods, particularly in disadvantaged communities, dumping and littering are taking place without a second thought. There is also a total disregard for the environment.
Clean Your Hood is a clarion call to all Capetonians to do what they can to keep neighbourhoods clean. The call is not about attributing blame, but merely raising awareness.
Law enforcement has now impounded a total of 88 vehicles, with four trucks, 17 bakkies and one trailer that are uncollected at the city’s pound, all of which were impounded for dumping.
Members of the public are urged to report this type of behaviour to law enforcement from a landline on 107 or from a cellphone on 021 480 7700.
Information from members of the public resulting in an impoundment, arrest or recovery of stolen or illegal goods or the handing in of stolen or illegal goods with the understanding that a formal case docket will be opened at SAPS and a relevant case number provided will result in the provider of this information being paid a reward of up to R1 000 by the City of Cape Town.
