Lang: I’d like a bolder Brooke

- ALYSSIA BIRJALAL

THE multi-awarding-winning soapie The Bold and the Beautiful celebrates its 30th anniversary on television this week. To mark the milestone, Tonight spoke to Katherine Kelly Lang, who plays the infamous Brooke Logan. She has been on the series since episode one. What has it been like playing Brooke over the years? It’s been quite a journey. What I love about it is the history. To have 30 years playing a character is truly history in itself. I’ve also had moments when I was like, come on, get past this point of your life and make something of yourself – Brooke tends to make the same mistakes over and over again, repeating the same cycle. But I look back at all the storylines she has been in and it makes for great viewing. I think that’s why people love her. If you were to write her character, what would you change? I would like to see her get more involved in business, create a company for herself, things that she used to do before. She was a chemist in the beginning, then she had Brooke’s Bedroom and even a men’s line with Thomas. I want to see her do something more for herself instead of being ruled by her emotions. I want to see her take charge. Are there days that you just wish you didn’t have to go into the studio? Honestly, no. What’s funny is that I love getting up and going to work. What I don’t want to do sometimes is study the script. Maybe because I’ve been doing it for long, and maybe because Brooke has been doing the same thing for so long. My honey usually helps me rehearse. Do you have any say in the script at all? No, but I voice what I would like to see happen to my character to the producers and writers because that’s important. Doesn’t mean things are going to change. We’ve been playing these characters for a long time so we also know what’s best, but what we do seems to be working so we are sticking to the formula. But I do drop a lot of hints so, maybe, in future she may change. Should you change something that’s working? No, but I definitely think that you can add to it. I think that Brooke will always have her weaknesses, of course, because it’s a soap opera, but they can definitely add to her and make it well-rounded, spice it up a little. Are there any similarities between you and your character? We both have big hearts. I don’t like the way Brooke makes her life all about her love life. She’s capable of doing so much better in her life. I am more of a go-getter. I like to do lots of different things. Currently I am involved in a clothing company, producing and heading up a cancer company called Break Away from Cancer. I love to empower women.

Brooke is just comfortable with her life. I hate seeing her this way. What message do you have for your fans who have followed your journey as Brooke Logan? I feel so blessed to have this job and that it’s going so strong. It’s only because of the fans that have been watching all these years. I meet so many people that say they watched from day one – and that’s fabulous. If we have that position in people’s lives, then we should also have a message. It’s good that we have started doing so, like… the Maya story about transgender. We are working on bringing up issues. That, to me, is great.
