Heathfield High School has made it into the semi-finals of the Cape Argus Food Lover’s Market High Schools Quiz for the first time, and is hoping to go all the way to winning the event.

During the last of the quarter-finals, Grade 12 pupil Taahirah Galant said the team had been working hard to get to where they are.

“Going through to the super finals is so amazing, because this is the furthest we’ve ever made it since we entered,” Galant said. “We are shocked we made it this far.” “Our principal will be shocked,” her teammate added.

“We are so proud that we can take our school this far,” Galant said.

Principal Mark Engelbrecht echoed that sentiment, saying he was very excited and also very proud of what the pupils had achieved.

“It highlights the dedication of the teachers who oversee them. It is a good balance of what the children have to offer, and it shows how the school is moving forward.

“I spoke to the school recently about gathering success and this is certainly adding to that philosophy,” Englebrecht said.

“It is encouraging the progress they are making, and I’m not taking any attribution for their success.

“The success is purely theirs as they’ve been doing the hard work. All the honours go to them – I’m just proud that they are learners who go to our school.”

Engelbrecht also believes that his pupils have the determination, and they are certainly focused enough to clinch the title this year.

“These are exceptional kids and I think they stand a hell of a good chance.

“This kind of activity is very encouraging for the children – it is exciting and comforting to see them sitting with piles and piles of Argus newspapers.”

The first of the two semi-finals of the quiz will take place on Saturday at Oaklands High School, where the top two teams from each semi-finals move on to the final round.
