Illusionist has the magic touch

- JAMAL GROOTBOOM

STUART Lightbody wows audiences with his magical sleight of hand in his show, Unique Wonders.

The art of illusion is not new to South African audiences, with shows such as the Got Talent franchise showcasing magic to national and international audiences. Seeing a magic show close up, though, is a different experience.

Walking into Unique Wonders I was quite excited because, although I have seen magic shows on TV, I have never seen an illusionist doing magic in person. It really is awe-inspiring to watch a magician live, doing what seems to be the impossible.

Lightbody does not only perform run-of-themill-card tricks. As an illusionist, he also does some mind-reading. The audience could only gasp as Lightbody displayed his skill.

His card illusion featured a ton of audience interaction, which added to the wonder of his show. One of the notable illusions included him tearing a card apart and reassembling it right in front of our eyes.

I know magic is not real, and until someone teleports in my presence or conjures fire from thin air, I’ll keep my belief at bay. However, Lightbody’s show does allow for full escapism and he makes you believe in every illusion.

He also dished out some magical history and introduced us to magicians who are famous in the illusionist world.

The final illusion is the real showstopper and I won’t spoil it. Let me just say that I have no idea how he did it and how it is even possible when he has a new audience every night.

Unique Wonders is a fun night out and provides an alternative form of entertainment to the usual concert or theatre show. If you are in Cape Town and want to watch something you don’t see every day, this is the show to watch.

● The show is runs until Saturday at the Alexander Bar in the Cape Town CBD.
