SIX people are to file complaints against Manenberg police after they were injured, some seriously, during a collision involving three police vans.

The provincial police confirmed yesterday that a case of negligent driving was registered for investigation. The case is being investigated by the Manenberg police station. Provincial police spokesperson FC van Wyk said the incident occurred on Wednesday about 9.15pm during which 13 police members and seven suspects were taken to hospital.

“The incident happened on the corners of Duinefontein and Turfhall Roads in Manenberg, and involved three police vans.”

Thirty-year-old Shamiel Mac was one of the people who were seriously injured. He explained they were all arrested earlier the evening. “After our arrests they were driving around with us for about four hours. They also held a road block while we were in one of the vans. Later at Duinefontein Road we heard a very loud noise and one of the vans crashed into the police vans we were in.

“After the accident we were all taken to hospital. I fractured my skull, which I will have to undergo an operation for. This also includes my left eye that was injured in the process when the collision took place.”

Ashraf Mohamed said: “Due to that the accident I became unconscious, so when I opened my eye I was laying outside the van to where they carried me. I badly injured my leg in the accident.”
