Pilgrimage by the numbers

CAIRO: The following numbers, provided by Saudi authoritie­s and media, highlight the 2017 Hajj season. 2.35 million attended. 1.75 million pilgrims are from outside Saudi Arabia. 600 000 are from inside Saudi Arabia. Males account for 1.33 million of the pilgrims. Female pilgrims number 1.01 million. Pilgrims from Europe are 84 894. Pilgrims from the Americas and Australia are 22 268.

Non-Arab Asian pilgrims are 1.04 million. Non-Arab African pilgrims are 186 873 Arab pilgrims are 415 644. 68000 Iranians made this year’s Hajj, after their country boycotted the 2016 event due to a row with Saudis over pilgrimage regulation­s.

1 564 Qataris arrived for this year’s Hajj amid a stand-off between their country and a Saudi-led Arab bloc.

300000 Saudi security force members and civilians have been deployed to protect and assist pilgrims.

1000 tons of pebbles on average are cast in a symbolic devil-stoning ritual performed over three days in the desert valley of Mina near the holy city of Mecca.

160000 tents have been pitched to accommodat­e pilgrims in Mina.

Every hour 107000 pilgrims circle the Kaaba in Mecca, towards which Muslims face while performing their daily prayers.

5000 surveillan­ce cameras have been installed at different sites of the Hajj journey. – dpa
