Uber driver shot dead in hijacking

- Marvin Charles

THE COMMUNITY OF Summer Greens is shocked after an Uber driver was shot dead in cold blood in Summer Greens Drive.

Khumbulani Sibindi, 35, was sitting in his white Polo Vivo when three suspects approached him and tried to rob him of his vehicle, threatening him with a gun.

It is believed that, when he refused to get out of his car, he was shot in the stomach and pulled out of his car and left for dead.

“A murder case was registered for investigation. No arrests have been made,” said police spokesperson, FC van Wyk.

The Summer Greens Neighbourhood Watch arrived at the scene just after the shooting. “We don’t know all the details because there were no eyewitnesses, but the hijackings in the area are getting out of hand not only for Uber drivers but for everyone,” Neighborhood Watch chairperson Reagan Croesier said.

A close friend of Sibindi, Pride Mariuf who also works as an Uber driver, said he was shocked when he heard news of Sibindi’s death.

“He was a very good person, always polite and very faithful,” Mariuf said. He added that Uber drivers remain unsafe.

“It’s getting harder for us and no one is out there to protect us, we have no protection at all,” he said. Mariuf said that tomorrow they will be burying another one of his fellow Uber drivers who was shot on Friday in Gugulethu.

Meanwhile, in Gauteng, Premier David Makhura briefed the media on law enforcement measures to help end violence involving meter taxis and Uber drivers.

Makhura said that only 28 people has been arrested in connection with meter taxi and Uber driver violence. A total of 166 cases was still being investigated.
