Pienaar has no Pirates regrets
FORMER Bafana Bafana captain Steven “Schillo” Pienaar still maintains that he made the right choice when he opted to sign for Wits instead of Orlando Pirates.
Pirates were one of the teams that wanted to acquire the services of Pienaar at the beginning of the season. The well-travelled midfielder made the decision to join Wits despite the fact that his whole family are die-hard Pirates supporters.
Pienaar has endured a terrible start with the defending PSL champions. Tomorrow they will face another mammoth task as they try to inflict a first defeat on Pirates when they meet at Bidvest Stadium.
Pirates are still unbeaten in five league encounters, while Wits are searching for their first victory in the league after five outings. They have lost three times and drawn twice. Wits are lying second from bottom on the standings.
“Yes definitely, I made the right choice. I made the decision myself. I’m happy where I am. It is just a bad start. We will get out of it. The sun will come out for us. We are creating chances and we are conceding goals through our mistakes. At the moment it is not falling for us. We have to keep on working hard. There is no lack of desire at the club. We are working hard everyday. When you are unfortunate, you are unfortunate. We don’t have luck with us at the moment. We have to come out of the situation as a team,” Pienaar explained.
Pirates are not a well-oiled machine as yet but if there’s one thing that Milutin “Micho” Sredojevic has brought to the club, it is the ability to earn victory without playing well. Pirates are currently occupying third place on the log with 11 points after three wins and two draws.
“My whole family supports Pirates. It will be an emotional weekend. It (is a) good way to bounce back playing against the top club. They’ve been playing well lately. We have to take it as it comes. It’s been difficult. When you lose everyone is down. It is part of the game. We are all in it. At the end of the day we have to keep working hard,” Pienaar stated.
Pienaar made a return to South African football this season after spending 16 years plying his trade around Europe.
“It is disappointing when you are not winning games. We are all down. As the defending league champions we will always face challenges against any other opposition in the league because they want to beat us. Every team we play against they want to beat us, it is like a Cup final. We have to face the storm. There is a lot of talent is this team. It is the bad start but we have to face the storm,” Pienaar said.
