Teen held after bungled cash-in-transit attack

-

A 17-YEAR-OLD teenager has been arrested following a shoot-out with SBV guards for attempting to rob a cash-intransit truck at a railway station in Khayelitsha.

A cash truck stopped at the Nolungile railway station at 10.45am to collect cash, Hawks spokesman Captain Lloyd Ramovha said.

The guards were on their way back to the truck when a group of about five armed suspects suddenly fired shots at them. The guards returned fire and the suspects fled to a nearby taxi rank.

Local police and the Hawks’ National Bureau for illegal Firearms Control and Priority Violent Crime Unit, were summoned to the scene.

A hunt for the suspects was launched, resulting in the arrest of the teenager.

He was found near the taxi rank, sprawled on the ground with apparent gunshot wounds and a loaded handgun.

Captain Lloyd Ramovha said: “The suspect was admitted to a local hospital and is under police guard.

The remaining suspects are still at large and the Hawks team is closing in on them.”

The suspect is expected to appear in Khayelitsha Magistrate’s Court today to face charges of attempted robbery, attempted murder and possession of an unlicensed firearm. – Staff Reporter
