Experts spot rare water bird at the weekend

-

A NEW bird species was sighted by birdwatchers and nature reserve experts at an annual Faunal Survey, held at the weekend.

The survey was conducted overnight at the Cape Flats Nature Reserve, part of UWC. UWC spokesperson Hestelle Mellville said birdwatchers spotted a cormorant bird also known as the Phalacrocoracidae, a water bird, flying past.

She said the tally of species including tortoises, reptiles, frogs and insects was being finalised.

“We did the tally to compare the ecosystem to how it was this time last year.

“Due to the fires from last year, we noted that the animals moved to the land nearby and are adapting well. This is an indication that our ecosystem is alive and doing well.”

A part of the survey was to give university graduates an opportunity to work closely with experts. – Staff Reporter
