JOHANNESBURG-BASED celebrity make-up artist Gina Myers held her first make-up master class in Durban over the weekend that was sponsored by Glampalm. Myers is also a motivational speaker, MC and connoisseur of all things beautiful. She is inspired by women and the desire to empower others to see their own inner beauty. She shares with us her make-up do’s and dont’s Please tell us more about yourself ?
I’m quite a homey girl. I love my hair in a top bun. I like chilling with a glass of wine and having a healthy salad. But the salad has to look pretty (instagramworthy!). I also love people. How did start in the industry?
Make-up has always fascinated me. I decided to take a year off studies to decide what I really wanted to do and where my passion was. After completion of my make-up course, everything fell into place. People initially told me to forget a career as a make-up artist because it wasn’t a career – I am so glad I proved them all wrong. Which iconic looks do you love?
Nothing more sexy than a red lip. Natural face. Lashes done. But a statement red lip. It definitely oozes confidence.
Women. All women! Every women has a story. And everyday I’m meeting women who have overcome the impossible in their own way. What surprises you most about working as a make-up artist?
Make-up artistry is still not taken seriously by so many people. It’s not seen a business. Or respected as one. It still astounds me. What does it take to be successful in your industry?
Dedication. Confidence. Patience. You have to have a thick skin. Remember it’s never about you. It’s about the model/ event/actress/bride. You cant be a drama queen – you have to maintain professionalism always. What are the biggest make-up do’s and dont’s? Find your correct foundation colour. Don’t clump your lashes. It’s not cool. Look after your skin. Invest in a good foundation. Less is more! Which Looks are the most popular this summer?
Lots of glitter! Matte is out and glitter is so in right now. This includes the lips, lashes and highlighter too. Main focus is on the skin being as natural as possible and encouraging natural beauty to radiate through
