Locked park angers residents

RESIDENTS who have been using Malta Park to walk their fourlegged friends for decades are up in arms as the City fenced and locked it.

The locals said that instead of being consulted they saw a fence being erected and a security guard who opens and locks it. They were told they were no longer welcome after sports clubs, paying to use the grounds, complained about unauthorised sport matches and dog walkers not picking up after their pets.

Johan Beaurain, a resident who has been staying in the area for more than 20 years, said they were undermined.

“We have a WhatsApp group where we discuss the park. People are frustrated, especially those who stay near the river. It is dangerous to walk dogs there. Last week there was an incident. We feel like our councillor doesn’t care about us but we will continue fighting,” Beaurain said.

Ward 57 councillor Paddy Chapple who had supported the closure of the field has advised residents to use other facilities, but Beaurain said it was the closest place and they weren’t as suitable for residents who had health complaints.

Mayco member for safety and security; and social services JP Smith said clubs paid a council-approved tariff to use the fields for their matches. But many times they had encountered illegal play, which accelerated the damage to the fields, as well as dog faeces.

“Alternative space is available on the field and on the pathway opposite the River Club.

“Previously when we had day security, residents could still access fields in a controlled environment, Smith said.
