Class acts on track
RACEGOERS from across Cape Town, South Africa and elsewhere around the world descended on Kenilworth Racecourse for the Sun Met celebrated with GH Mumm on Saturday.
Revellers showed off their finest Afrochic – the theme for the 2018 event – and were pleasantly surprised when the fastest man on earth, the now retired sprinter Usain Bolt, made his dramatic entrance.
Ever the showman, Bolt arrived by helicopter, waving to the crowd as his made his way through the throngs of adoring fans towards the Sun Met Diamond Lounge to mingle with other VIPs.
It was a dusty, windy day, but that didn’t stop the racegoers from having fun, or from betting on Africa’s richest race day.
Coming from the outside after starting from Gate 20, it was Oh Susanna, one of three horses from outside South Africa, who took top honours.
Behind her were Last Winter in second place and another favourite, Marinaresco, in third place.
Winner of the L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate, Legal Eagle came in fourth.
Inside the hospitality tents, the champagne flowed, accompanying course upon course of food, as media personalities and celebrities mingled.
Entertainment was provided throughout the day and young and established designers had an opportunity to show off their wares at various fashion shows.
For those who managed to survive all the races, the after party was a rocking affair with live music and DJs keeping the vibe going well into the night.
