Khoi airport name to unify
THE renaming of Cape Town International Airport has been strongly suggested lately, and honour-deserving names included Nelson Mandela, Winnie Madikizela-Mandela and Albertina Sisulu.
However, honouring a woman who was also jailed on Robben Island and was recently brought back into our national conscience through the film industry, would make sense for Cape Town: namely, Krotoa.
The lack of recognition and marginalisation of the offspring of the first indigenous people is topical.
Would it not be a great unifier for our government to rather honour this well-known historic figure, if in the first place renaming must happen, by changing the name of Cape Town International to Krotoa CT International Airport?
The 17th century Khoi resistance leader, Doman, has already been honoured when his statue was one of four historic figures (three African kings and one Khoi freedom fighter) unveiled at the Castle of Good Hope. This was an inclusive, positive step to embrace our collective history.
The opinion of Khoi leaders and the offspring of first indigenous people on this suggestion, Krotoa CT International Airport, would be highly appreciated.
