Donated water to go to most in need
WITH the looming threat of Day Zero receiving national attention this year, water collection initiatives were launched across the country to ensure no one was left without a drop.
The #6BFORME is one such initiative which managed to collect 10 000 litres of water, and this was delivered to Cape Town recently.
The project launched by the City of Cape Town together with Stor-Age was established to create an awareness of the 50 litre daily water limit and to set up national water collection points across the country.
Donations poured in at collection points based at Stor-Age facilities, and now the donations will be distributed to those in need across the Cape.
“Over 10 000 litres of donated water arrived in Cape Town for those most in need.
“The water was donated through StorAge stores across the country, with the most support coming from Gauteng.
“We have been overwhelmed by the amount of support this initiative has received, and we would like to thank each and every person who donated water to this cause.
“We would also like to thank the City for working with us on this important project,” said Stor-Age spokesperson Chris Oosthuizen.
Mayco member for facilities and assets Stuart Diamond said that the City is excited about the initiative as it will be able to put water used by big events such as the Gun Run and the Cycle Tour back into the system.
“There has been concern by residents about the effect of big events on our water footprint and now we will be able to put water back into the system. Even though we’ve had rain recently, consumption has gone up and people still need to use water in a responsible manner. We’re not out of the woods yet, we have to save now and queue later if need be,” said Diamond.
