Peace programme gives power to youth

- COUNCILLOR MARK RH KLEINSCHMIDT Ward 60

ARISING from the heart-wrenching article by Grade 12 pupil Britney Williams, (“Peace and Hope”, Cape Argus, June 19) Groenvlei High School in Lansdowne, I attended a peace ambassador dialogue hosted by professor Brian Williams.

The peace ambassadors, all pupils residing in Hanover Park, were very positive about the outcomes and interacted amazingly well, unafraid to voice their opinions and fears.

Both professor Williams and I were impressed with the maturity and insight displayed by the pupils.

Principal and deputy principal Messrs Tony Adamson and Patrick Hendricks with educator Gail Prodehl were enthralled by the peace ambassadors programme, which concludes at the end of June.

Pupils have been empowered to conceptualise various peace projects in their communities.

Williams states, “The peace ambassador programme is about activating the light which exists in everyone and the philosophy of the programme is based on his poem, One Light”.
