Pair jailed for slaying

-

PARIS: A French court has sentenced two men to prison on charges of deadly violence against a Chinese textile designer in 2016. During a closed-door trial, the court gave one defendant a 10-year jail term and the other five years in prison with a 12-month suspension.

They were found guilty of “robbery with death” and causing a “total work disability of less than eight days” to the designer’s friend. On August 7, 2016, fashion designer Zhang Chaolin, 49, and his Chinese friend were mugged. The pair and a teenager – jailed for three months – violently attacked the designer, trying to steal his bag. He was in a coma for five days before dying. His death fuelled mass demonstrations by the Chinese community. – Xinhua
