'Crazy Rich Asians' one glamorous ride

- JAMAL GROOTBOOM

CATEGORY is opulence. You own everything! This perfectly describes Crazy

Rich Asians. The Jon M Chu directed romantic comedy is nothing short of brilliant with excellent acting, amazing set design and a relatable love story.

The film is based on a global best seller of the same name and follows native New Yorker Rachel Chu (Constance Wu) to Singapore to meet her boyfriend Nick Young’s (Henry Golding) family. She finds out that the future in-laws aren’t simply rich, they’re super wealthy and are considered as Chinese royalty. Chu then navigates her way through this new world with hilarious results.

Crazy Rich Asians is one of the best romantic comedies of the last 10 years, and this is mostly due to the expert casting and razor-sharp script, specifically when it comes to Constance Wu and Henry Golding. The chemistry between the actors is so magnetic that it feels tangible.

These two will make you believe in love and yearn for someone to look at you the way Young looks at Chu. This is the type of on-screen chemistry that one comes across once in a while and this connection between them is what really makes this film an enjoyable viewing experience.

The supporting cast is also so interesting and well rounded that a whole series about them would be something I would watch in a heartbeat. Jon M Chu really gave the cast a lot of nonverbal acting cues. Watch how shade is thrown with merely a look or side-eye.

The set design is also to die for. Watching this movie is not going to make you feel broke, it’s going to make you feel poor. The level of opulence and extravagance that is shown is not meant to be flashy, in the way that Americans flaunt their riches. It just is the way things are for the Young family. Even the costume design is not filled with braggadocios high-end Italian design brands. The styling and the way they carry themselves, is more than enough to convey just how wealthy everyone is.

Furthermore, the pacing is so effectively done that by the end of the movie you are left wanting more.

Also, a special vote of thanks to director Jon M. Chu for all the beautiful men being shirtless most of the time.

It has been a long time since a romantic comedy hit all the right notes.

Crazy Rich Asians is a brilliant movie with a spectacular screenplay, amazing acting and set design that needs to be watched on the big screen.

This is a must-watch film.
