Delft students showcase musical prowess

- STAFF REPORTER

THE second annual Sekunjalo Delft Music Academy (SDMA) showcase will be taking place tomorrow at Rosendaal High School. This will see students from the music academy taking the stage in front of their family, friends and other music lovers in the Delft community.

Many of the students will be performing for the first time. As an essential part of the Sekunjalo Delft Big Band Non-Profit Company (NPC), the SDMA gives the youth of Deft and its surrounding areas the opportunity to learn how to read music and play a musical instrument too.

The teachers of the programme consist of members of the Sekunjalo Delft Big Band (SDBB) who want nothing more than to pass on their knowledge and skills to the next generation of musicians.

The students at the academy have lessons at Rosendaal High School on Saturday mornings and, with fees for the academy kept an affordable rate, it encourages families to make use of this life-changing opportunity.

This year’s showcase will also have a performance by the 18-piece Sekunjalo Delft Big Band. Last year, the concert featured different sections of the band (the rhythm section, a clarinet ensemble, alto and tenor saxophone ensemble and a trombone and trumpet ensemble) each performing one or two pieces.

One of the notable pieces was a trumpet fanfare.

The NPC is funded by Survé Philanthropies, which, among other things, provides the students with musical instruments. This project is part of Survé Philanthropies’ focus on youth development through the arts.

For more information, contact Trudy Rushin, Project Coordinator of Survé Philanthropies, on 083 491 3048. Admission for the showcase is R20 and starts at 1 pm, with refreshments and the Sekunjalo

Delft Big Band CD on sale.
