THE City of Cape Town’s fire and rescue services responded to three informal settlement fires which killed three people in the early hours of yesterday morning.

In Sweet Home informal settlement, two structures were destroyed, killing one person and injuring six. In Curlew Street, Robinvale, Atlantis, one informal structure was destroyed and one person died of burns in the blaze.

In Van Riebeeck Road, Firgrove, one informal structure was destroyed and a person died. “The causes of each of these incidents remain undetermined. All the incidents were handed over to police for their investigation,” said Theo Layne, Cape Town Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson.

Yesterday afternoon, the City’s fire and rescue services responded to another fire in Lotus River when Montagu’s Gift Primary School was apparently set alight by arsonists.

“The City’s fire and rescue team also responded to a fire at 2.25pm. Two classrooms were damaged by the fire. There were no injuries, and the cause of the fire is still undetermined,” Layne said.
