BRUTALITY OF TRAIN ATTACK HORRIFYING

- AZIZ HARTLEY

OUR hearts bleed for the victims of yet another attack on a Metrorail train. As reported today, the brutal assault left one man dead and eight others injured. They were robbed before being flung from a moving train.

The deceased was a 32-year-old. The young man in the prime of his life was so brutally stabbed, a knife’s blade was stuck in his skull. Imagine being thrown from a speeding train. I’m horrified by the brutality and callousness of the scum who meted out such violence on ordinary and law-abiding passengers. Many questions arise.

Why were these knife-wielding thugs allowed on the train? Where was Metrorail’s security? How many more gruesome attacks must be visited on fee-paying passengers? Yes, Metrorail’s problems are huge, but the agency and its mother body, Prasa, no longer deserve public sympathy.

The young man’s family and the other victims should sue them to hell and gone. The overwhelming majority of Metrorail’s clients are from disadvantaged communities. Many of them are also breadwinners and just can’t afford travelling by bus or taxi. Why must they be subjected to such terror like Friday’s attack?

The very least Metrorail and the police can do is to ensure their safety on trains.
