Tow truck company bullying me

- S SEWSANKER

ON AUGUST 25, 2018, I was involved in a motor vehicle accident on North Coast Road. I lost control of the vehicle and it veered off the road through a fence and into a printing company’s property. I did have two male passengers with me and we had a couple of beers prior to the accident. No one was hurt, but I was arrested by Greenwood Park police and charged for drunken driving.

They did not impound my vehicle and it was towed without my authorisation and left at a panel beater in Glen Anil. When I got out the next day, my wife and I searched high and low, and located the car. We called the owner of the panel beater and he told us he could release the car only on the Monday and we had to pay him R9 000.

My wife and I went to the panel beaters and told the owner that the car was there illegally and it had been towed without my authorisation, but he didn’t listen, he still demanded that we pay him. On top of the R9 000, he’s charging us R1000 a day for storage. My wife and I went to the Phoenix police station to open a case of theft against the tow truck company and we were declined. We also went to Greenwood Park police station on three occasions and they declined us.

We met the station commander and explained what had happened and he said that we can’t open a case, for every question that we asked him his response was, “I don’t know, I wasn’t at the scene.” All I want is to get my car back and these people are robbing us.
