UWC offers e-skills postgraduate diploma, first for SA

- Staff Reporter

AS technology evolves, it broadens the scope in career development, creating new fields of study for the next generation to explore.

This is why the University of the Western Cape is showcasing it’s new immersive technology stream of its Postgraduate Diploma in e-skills at the Film Fest Expo this week.

The diploma is the first accredited postgraduate diploma of its kind in South Africa and allows pupils the chance to explore options for study in immersive technologies, including Virtual Reality (VR), which replaces the user’s real world, and Augmented Reality (AR) which creates an interactive experience of a real-world environment.

According to head of Computer Science Professor, Antoine Bagula, objects that reside in the real world are augmented by computer-generated perceptual information across multiple sensory modalities to create AR. This can be used to enhance the way people are educated in various fields.

“[The course] is done in collaboration with Eon Reality which is one of the internationally renowned companies in AR and VR. A study showed that AR and VR is part of the fourth industrial revolution. There will be lots of jobs in this area,” said Bagula.

The UWC AR and VR stand is on display at the 2018 edition of the Cape Town International Film Market and Festival until October 19 at venues across the V & A Waterfront.
