BIL­LION­AIRE KID­NAPPED

TAN­ZA­NIA’S rich­est man Mo­hammed Dewji, who is re­port­edly worth $1.5bil­lion (R22bn), has been kid­napped, po­lice said yes­ter­day.

Dar es Salaam re­gional po­lice com­mis­sioner Paul Makonda said op­er­a­tions were un­der way to res­cue Dewji and ar­rest the sus­pects.

The 43-year-old busi­ness­man and for­mer mem­ber of par­lia­ment was kid­napped as he left a ho­tel gym in the cap­i­tal, ac­cord­ing to un­con­firmed me­dia re­ports.

He owns the METL Group con­glom­er­ate, which op­er­ates in a wide range of in­dus­tries in­clud­ing trade, agri­cul­ture and fi­nan­cial ser­vices among oth­ers, ac­cord­ing to Forbes mag­a­zine. He is Africa’s youngest bil­lion­aire. |
