‘COLONIALS’ WANTED PROSPERITY FOR ALL

-

I FIND it hard to believe there are still people who believe skin colour should be a relevant factor in employment (“No progress in reversing colonialism”, Koketso Marishane, Cape Argus, October 17).

The writer seems ignorant of the history of colonialism generally, and how there were people with other skin colours whose land was invaded by black tribes (not just the Western Cape). And that these people are still residents in South Africa, and are still employed for their skills and abilities, not their skin colour.

And the phrase “architects of poverty” is ridiculous – most colonials wanted the resident population to prosper, as most were in business and wanted to sell their products and services.

I’ve banged this drum before, but having lots of children is a good way to ensure poverty, and colonials have generally advised family planning. ROB JOHNSTON Tokai
