IEC rec­om­mends 2019 elec­tion pe­riod

GEN­ERAL elec­tions must be held be­tween May 7 and Au­gust 5, 2019, the Elec­toral Com­mis­sion of SA (IEC) an­nounced yes­ter­day.

Pres­i­dent Cyril Ramaphosa will an­nounce the ex­act date in due course.

Dur­ing the up­date on the state of readi­ness for the elec­tions, the com­mis­sion also re­vealed that there were 26.1 mil­lion reg­is­tered vot­ers.

Chair­per­son Glen Mashinini said he hoped at least one mil­lion more vot­ers would be added to the voter’s roll be­fore reg­is­tra­tion closes.

He said vot­ing sta­tions would open from 8am to 5pm on Jan­uary 26-27, 2019 to al­low new vot­ers to reg­is­ter and ex­ist­ing vot­ers to con­firm their reg­is­tra­tion de­tails. |
