METRORAIL bosses may end up paying a deadly price for putting profits before passengers, United Commuters Voice spokesperson Joao Jardim said yesterday.

This was after two passengers fell from trains. The incidents happened at about 7.30am yesterday.

Metrorail spokesperson Riana Scott said in the first incident a young man who was moving between coaches fell between Melton Rose and Blackheath.

Scott said the other incident happened when a train was travelling between Heathfield and Retreat.

A man who allegedly stood at the open doors of a train fell.

“In both incidents victims were offered medical attention, and were transferred to nearby hospitals,” Scott said.

Scott said Metrorail regrets both incidents.

“The region’s reduced fleet contributes to overcrowding and safety campaigns are held regularly to raise awareness of safe travelling practises,” Scott said

Jardim said nothing has changed on the trains.

Commuters still suffer from crime and stand for hours despite spending hundreds of rand on train tickets

Scott said commuters must remain behind the yellow line on platforms.

“Commuters must embark or disembark from a train only when it has come to a complete stop.

“People must keep train doors closed in transit and refrain from travelling between carriages,” Scott said.

Metrorail regional manager Richard Walker said a reason for the delays was resignalling work.
