A TRUCK carrying cattle overturned on the N1 at Prince Albert Road between Laingsburg and Leeu Gamka, causing traffic congestion.

Western Cape traffic chief Kenny Africa said the accident happened at about 6am yesterday.

“The truck was obscuring the free flow of traffic and was lying across the N1, blocking both lanes,” Africa said.

Luckily, the driver and the stock were not injured.

The driver said the load shifted as he was driving, which caused the truck to flip.

On Monday, three people were killed in two separate crashes in the Karoo overnight, bringing the number of fatalities over the long weekend to nearly 40.

Two women died when they were hit by a car on the R407 in Prince Albert early yesterday.

According to traffic officials, the women had been involved in an accident and were trying to retrieve their clothing from the roadway when the car hit them. No one else was injured.

In another incident, between Leeu Gamka and Beaufort West, three taxis, five cars and a truck were involved in a pile-up. The driver of one of the cars died.
