THE Lions Club International of Kirstenbosch has donated 20 bursaries to pupils from various schools in Cape Town in honour of the Jack Segall Bursary Fund.

The Jack Segall Bursary, established in 2016, aims to fund students who struggle to pay school fees.

The pupils who received bursaries were from Mountview High, Fish Hoek High, Spine Road High, Ned Doman High, Thandokhulu High, School of Hope High, Norman Henshilwood and Fairmount High.

The pupils were selected on the basis of a self-evaluation questionnaire and were then short listed. The learners were not only chosen based on their academic results, but their perseverance to complete their matric.

A few of these pupils were from disadvantaged areas and these bursaries will serve towards a better future.

“Some of them were the first matriculants in the family and others from gang-torn areas. They were passionate about breaking out of a challenging environment and many were involved in community upliftment projects,” said Rehana Khan Parker, president of Lions Club Kirstenbosch.

“All the learners awarded were ideal role models in their communities and strong ambassadors for their school.”

“We believe that the most effective tool is to liberate people financially and to help them have an education in order to be self sufficient.”

The Lions Club also depends on the public and sponsors to play a role in making positive changes in the lives of others.
