STREET RACERS ARE CALLOUS

- LANCE WITTEN

IS THE illegal street racer alone to blame for his stupidity that caused him to nearly lose his life on Sunday night?

I’m not here to debate his actions and whether or not we should have sympathy for him. I’m here to find solutions.

Here is a fact: despite there being space available for street racers to compare the size of their modification lists, they will continue to do it on public roads. They do it because it’s illegal, so let’s get that out of the way.

Let’s get another thing out of the way: they are callous and cold and do not care about others. They are selfish.

Was he thinking about his family if he died?

There’s a WhatsApp message doing the rounds with a video of someone in the driver’s backyard, walking around the wreckage of the vehicle, showing how he needed to be cut out of the vehicle.

A few seconds later, the person in the video pops open the hood to show the modded-out engine, and tries to sell it to anyone willing to “offer me R1 million”. This, while someone obviously close to him lies fighting for his life in hospital.

Callous. Cold. Uncaring. Then there are the spectators. If no one was watching, would these racers still do what they do?

Thankfully no one else was injured in Sunday’s crash, and the driver of the suped-up BMW M3 survived. I hope that when he looks at his scars, he will realise how reckless he has been, and tries to convince others to keep racing in a controlled environment, where only like-minded hooligans can be injured by their idiocy.
