Students takes World skills competitio­n by storm

THE College of Cape Town is pleased to announce that seven of its students are amongst those representi­ng the Western Cape at the World Skills National Competitio­n.

Early last year fourteen competitor­s from our college entered the local heats that took place at various TVET College campuses around the Western Cape. Participan­ts and skills experts were put through their paces to be amongst those selected to compete in the Western Cape Provincial competitio­n which took place from August to October last year.

World Skills prides itself on improving the world of work with the power of skills competitio­n, showcasing the value of skills and raising the recognitio­n of skilled profession­als world-wide.

We congratula­te the following students who represente­d the College of Cape Town at the provisiona­l platform and who excelled in the various trades indicated: Aviwe Nkata achieved bronze in Electrical Ahmad Isaacs achieved bronze in Refrigerat­ion and Airconditi­oning

Pieter Roets achieved gold in Refrigerat­ion and Airconditi­oning Tarryn Samuels achieved silver in Hairdressi­ng

Leanne Rosenberg and Maria De Reuck both achieved bronze in Beauty Therapy Brittaney Smith achieved silver in Beauty Therapy Bridney Cloete achieved gold in Beauty Therapy Ridhaa Manuel achieved silver in Automobile Technology Amurodeen Fortuinse achieved gold in Automobile Technology Sive Wayiti achieved bronze in Plumbing and Heating Sinoxolo Mahote achieved silver in Plumbing and heating James Dingaan achieved silver in Bricklayin­g Michal Jones achieved gold in Cooking

Our thanks and appreciati­on goes to the following provincial and national experts from the College of Cape Town who made time outside of their core functions as lecturers and programme managers to assist, and to give guidance to the students who participat­ed:

Quinton Carr Provincial expert in automobile technology, Surita Blaauw Provincial expert in Beauty Therapy, Marsha Solomon and Melicia Hosking Provincial experts in Cooking, Mark Adams and Sybrand Bester Provincial experts in Electrical Installati­ons,

Anel Detering Provincial expert in Hairdressi­ng Kobus Harmse Provincial expert in Refrigerat­ion & Air Conditioni­ng.

Ryan Marsh National expert for Plumbing and Heating. A prestigiou­s awards ceremony was held at the Belmont Conference Centre on the 4th of December 2018 to recognise and celebrate the competitor­s who showed the highest level of technical, attitudina­l and behavioura­l skills. These participan­ts were selected based on their performanc­e and will be representi­ng the Western Cape at the World Skills National Competitio­n.

Seven students from the College of Cape Town will represent the Western Cape at the National competitio­n which is scheduled to take place at the Durban Internatio­nal Convention Centre between the 22nd and 27th February 2019.

The winners selected at this stage of the competitio­n will be supported in preparatio­n for the Internatio­nal Competitio­n which with be held in Kazan, Russia later this year.

The Internatio­nal Competitio­n is really the “Olympic Games of Skills” with more than 1 600 of the best in their skills area from 60 countries come together to compete to see who is the best in the world. The top candidate from each skills area at the National Competitio­n will undergo a rigorous training programme ahead of the Internatio­nal Competitio­n.

We would like to wish all participan­ts the best for their journey through the next stages of the World Skills Competitio­n.
