LET’S CREATE OUR OWN GOOD NEWS

- LANCE WITTEN

IT IS very easy to get bogged down by negative news. After all, there isn’t much to keep us smiling, is there?

Eskom is in the doldrums, the economy isn’t looking great, and with elections around the corner, who wants to read about what politicians have to say? They’re only going to do what they can to get your vote.

But there are good news stories to be told out there and good people to celebrate.

Take, for example, the vets looking after a flock of baby flamingos left destitute by the drought.

Some of these chicks require hourly feeding. More than a thousand flamingos were rescued. The babies are reportedly doing well.

There is a researcher who has figured out how to track pollen. That’s a massive breakthrough, considering the threats to food security in South Africa.

There’s a 92-year-old woman who was handed the keys and title deed to her very own house yesterday. She got roses, too, for Valentine’s Day.

Yes, it’s just one example of a woman getting a house, and yes, they’re just birds, and yes, pollen represents a prime evil to some at springtime when their allergies play up, but good news stories are more than the individuals they affect and benefit directly.

They are stories of hope, and they represent what the human spirit is capable of.

It’s easy to bow our heads, drop our shoulders and worry about where this country is headed.

It takes courage to look at these good news stories, lift our heads, puff out our chests with a deep breath in, and go about contributing to building a better future.

The future is, after all, what we make it.

Let’s project positivity and play an active role in creating the good news that will inspire hope in others.
