Shoprite bursary applications

- Staff Reporter

SHOPRITE is still accepting bursary applications for the 2019 academic year.

First- and second-year students who wish to study in the logistics, information technology and data sciences, as well as retail management fields, have a chance of being awarded a bursary of up to R70 000 by completing an online application.

Last year, about 286 students benefited from the programme, which translated to an investment in excess of R15 million.

“I was unable to secure a bursary in my matric year. In my first year I was conducting an online search when I found the Shoprite bursary programme,” Mpilo Sicwebu, a trainee accountant and former Shoprite bursary holder studying at Wits University, said.

The 23-year-old from Durban grabbed the opportunity and said he could fully focus on his studies because the worry about finances was lifted.

Now an accounting article clerk at Shoprite’s home office, he said no two work days were the same.

“I expected an every-manfor-himself environment, but was surprised to find something totally different.

“Everyone here is so accessible and willing to help me grow and develop,” Sicwebu said.

The Shoprite Group said this bursary, which covered tuition and accommodation fees, came with a work-back agreement, which would see successful applicants assured of a job at the largest private sector employer in the country once they had graduated.

“It is not only accounting students who benefit from a structured programme once they join the group.

“A graduate programme is rolled out to all bursary holders employed by the retailer upon graduation,” Shoprite said. |
