Bursaries awarded to transport students
TRANSPORT and Public Works MEC Donald Grant awarded more than 127 bursaries to students studying in the transport-related field at CPUT in Bellville.
“Our commitment to capacity building and job creation for the youth is one of our key drivers as the Western Cape government, and particularly as the Department of Transport and Public Works. Our aim is to ensure that new skills are available to feed entry level posts in the transport, engineering and built environment; skills that have become scarce not only in the Western Cape, but in South Africa as a whole,” Grant said.
The Masakh’iSizwe Bursary Programme is a flagship programme that focuses on attracting and facilitating the development and availability of skills identified as scarce and critical.
Once these skills have been developed, the department hopes that recipients of the bursaries will assist them in meeting the operational needs of the department, as well as those of the private companies who participate in the Masakh’iSizwe Bursary Collaboration Venture (BCV).
The name “Masakh’iSizwe” comes from the Nguni languages and means “Let’s Build the Nation”.
The overarching aim is ultimately to develop the nation through education and training.
“As a country currently in a radical developmental phase known as the Fourth Industrial Revolution, we are required constantly to evolve our thinking and to reposition ourselves regularly in order to respond effectively to changes in the transport, engineering and built environment.”
The department, through its Masakh’iSizwe Bursary Programme, offers bursaries to those studying towards qualifications in the field of transport economics which, as a skill set, is important to the work they do in the land transportation space and other fields in the built environment.
Over the past five years, the Masakh’iSizwe Bbursary Programme has awarded 350 bursaries to deserving applicants. A total of 127 bursaries were awarded for the 2019 academic year, of which 23 are sponsored by the BCV partners. | Staff Reporter
