DNA tests, ID parade needed

- Zodidi Dano

FURTHER investigation needs to be done in the murder case of 6-year-old Elim girl Delvina Europa.

Yesterday, the Bredasdorp Magistrate’s Court postponed the matter against murder accused Reagan Zietsman to June 4.

The court heard that further investigation in terms of DNA results and an identity parade needed to be conducted.

Zietsman, 35, is facing a charge of rape and murder. It is alleged he had smothered the 6-year-old to death.

Delvina, a Grade 1 at Elim Moravian Primary School, was last seen by her aunt, Carol October, at around 4pm, playing in front of a home in Nuwe Straat, on March 24.

Her body was discovered in the bushes by a Community Policing Forum (CPF) member two days later.

Following his arrest, Zietsman abandoned his bail application.

Residents from Elim and neighbouring communities had compiled petitions to bring to the court to oppose bail. One petition by the CPF said the residents would not welcome Zietsman back into the community. “The community is with the family in mourning Delvina’s death and we are only now slowly beginning to heal. The accused’s release will rub salt into the wound.

“There is a high risk that our emotions, anger, can be provoked if we see him. The charges are serious. The crime is shocking and brutal. It’s in the interest of Elim not to grant bail.”

CPF chairperson Martin Salies said in the petition: “Residents feel scared. It would be a great risk to release the accused on bail. It will also be unsafe for young children who walk to and from school.”
