Modack and mother granted bail
CONTROVERSIAL businessman Nafiz Modack and his 60-year-old mother, Ruwaida Modack, are out on bail after appearing in the Cape Town Magistrate’s Court on corruption charges.
The two were each granted bail of R5 000 yesterday.
Hawks spokesperson Captain Philani Nkwalase said Modack and his mother had handed themselves over to the Hawks’ Serious Corruption Investigation Unit in Cape Town following a lengthy investigation into an alleged corrupt relationship with a former senior police officer.
“It is alleged that in November 2011 the duo paid gratifications through their two business entities to the senior police officer for favours to advance their private, personal business interests,” he said.
“The two business entities have been added as suspects in this matter.”
Nkwalase said the investigation formed part of the second leg of a probe, that to date had resulted in senior police officers being sentenced in the province on various charges of corruption.
He referred to the cases of former provincial police commissioner Arno Lamoer, and two former high-ranking officers, brigadiers Darius van der Ross and Kollin Govender.
The officers were convicted and sentenced in the Western Cape High Court.
