Side on track to stay unbeaten

One-sided encounter as home team rolls over and plays dead

DEVON Folding played a starring role for Bellville-South High School in their 55-14 victory over Bergvliet at the weekend

The one-sided Western Province Under-19 A2 match keeps the winner’s on track to end the season unbeaten for a fifth consecutive year.

Bellville-South would love a chance to mix it at a higher level, but can’t because they can only field two U19 teams.

For now the youngsters can only play what is in front of them, and, boy, did they get stuck into a Bergvliet team that played dead for most of the match.

The home side did score the first and last tries of the game, but that was about it from a well-beaten lot who looked hopelessly out of their depth. But for a handful of players the rest may want to consider hanging up their boots.

“Play the game” and “put in some effort” said a few of the home supporters, while one player looking for water behind his posts was told by a teammate “we don’t deserve any water”, which said it all. No one will fault a side taking a big smack as long as they give it their best shot, however Bergvliet failed to do so.

As for the victorious Bellville-South side it was total enjoyment on the field and from youngsters from previously disadvantaged communities just wanting an escape the problems they face daily.

What better way to find a safe haven than in a team setting, and in rugby these young adults have forged a brotherhood.

They can be proud of what they achieved.

Folding, who scored and converted his side’s first try to level matters at 7-7 a few minutes in, had a big game throughout. He broke the line at will and supplied try-scoring passes aplenty, with both forwards and backs cashing in. Right wing Leighton Moolman was one of the recipients and on his own scored using pace and swerve to easily outfox a fast-evaporating defensive line.

Touchdowns under the uprights on several occasions summed up the ease of it all.

“Hands win games, we saw that from our side,” said Bellville’s team manager, Keith Villet. “The boys have Sevens experience so for them it’s about running and swinging the ball through the hands. A fine performance but for a dip in discipline at times that will be addressed. Credit must go to the coaching staff, Ylrick Standers and Clive Daniels (2019 WP Grant Khomo Week coach) for their tireless work.

“Our aim this season is to stay unbeaten. The players know the history of past teams and want to keep the winning streak going, we’re on track for that.”
